Today we will be interviewing Roddy Hanson, the founder of Goshroomy, Shredibles and other notable health and wellness products.
Tell us about your background getting to where you are today?
My background is pretty all over the place. I have been an athlete my entire life which led me down many different avenues. In my early 20s I worked in the entertainment industry as a model, dancer and actor. This type of work required me to be in great shape which led me down the path of health and wellness. When I was 23 I launched my first company Shredibles which was a CBD protein protein bar. After 18 months this brand was acquired by a publicly traded company and I felt like I found my passion which was creating and innovating products within the nutrition industry.
Where are you from?
I was born in Florida and grew up in Seattle. After high school I moved to California and since then I have lived all over the place including New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico and I currently reside in Medellin Colombia.
When did you start your business?
I started my first business in 2018 at the age of 23. I started my holdings company “Arete” which all my brands sit under just under 2 years ago.
How did you get into Product development and entrepreneurship?
I saw gaps within the market of things that I would like to consume. I wanted to make it easier, convenient and fun for people to consume products that truly benefit themselves and help them perform at a higher level.
What is the most challenging thing you have overcome in your life?
Not too long ago I had a horrible infection in my blood and nearly died. I had to receive an emergency blood transfusion and was in the hospital for over a week. This was difficult for obvious reasons but the recovery from it was the worst part, being forced to take numerous medications and not being able to exercise and see my body change from something I had no control over was very difficult, but this was also my greatest life lesson.
Are you currently working on any new projects product wise?
Yes, I always have something new in the works. I am getting ready to launch an incredible mushroom based skincare line that also ties into helping save our oceans. We are also adding new SKUs to all my brands in the coming months.
Who inspires you most as an entrepreneur?
I would have to say Elon Musk. The way he has dominated multiple industries and used money from acquisitions to start his new companies was incredible. I aspire to be the Elon Musk of the health and wellness product space.
What do you want people to take away after consuming your product?
For one I want them to truly feel the difference. All of my products have different benefits and can be used for different reasons to make them truly functional. I want people to understand that the answers lie within nature and I am here to help them discover that, but also enjoy it at the same time.
Any new ideas or companies coming on the way?
Yes, but they are on the back burner right now. I am fully focused on the brands that are growing within the market.
What’s your greatest achievement as an entrepreneur?
When I started my first company from scratch with literally no money, no degree, no laptop and no experience in building a brand or experience in the food industry. I then built it into a successful acquisition to a public company in 18 months.
Do you produce your own products? If not, who do you work with?
Yes I produce my own products. For my quality control and running a tight ship when it comes to production is extremely important to me. We currently have a beautiful facility in San Diego and we are building out another higher capacity facility in Tampa.
Who is one business person you wish you could work with or collaborate with?
This is a weird answer but I would say Joe Rogan.
Tell us about any new projects or rollouts you have coming? When is it coming out? What is it about?
Shroomy gummies is going to be launching a sleep gummy in the coming months. Root Strength is launching a protein in Q2. Beautiful Sol launches our “Magic Mushroom Moisturizer” Q1.
What does a day inside your shoes look like?
I wake up at 5:45 and first I do gratitude and meditation and create my to-do list from most important to least and strategize how I will knock that out. Then I get ready for the gym and take 2 scoops of Root Strength and workout for about an hour. Once I get home I begin knocking out things on my list for a few hours. I have my first meal at 2pm and after that I allow myself sometime to sit back and think for an hour or two about business, life etc. After that I get back to work until usually 6pm doing calls. Once I am done I relax with my beautiful girlfriend and enjoy the evening.
Anything else you want the audience to know about you?
I am here to spread positive energy, love and connectivity and I try my best to emulate that through my products. My goal is to help others find happiness for themselves and I think a big part of that is feeling your best everyday by what you consume.
What are the challenges of being an Entrepreneur?
There are a million challenges of being an entrepreneur but the main thing is to stay positive and stick to your vision. You will fail, you will have days that suck, you won’t always win, but if the vision is there the rest does not matter.
